Think “down and back,” not “straight into my chest.” If your elbows stay tightly pinned to your sides, the exercise may begin to resemble a low row; that can be useful, but it reduces the contrast between the two variations.

  1. Set the pulley low and position yourself so the cable is taut at the start. A seated, supported setup can make it easier to keep the torso quiet.
  2. Reach forward without rounding aggressively through the lower back. Keep a soft knee or a stable seated position, depending on the setup.
  3. Pull the handle toward the abdomen or lower ribs by moving the elbows back. Keep the shoulders away from the ears and avoid turning the repetition into a backward lean.
  4. Pause briefly if you can maintain position, then return under control until the elbows are straight without letting the weight yank you forward.
